Choosing rings

Three things to ask at the counter.
How a price is built

  1. Plain and engraved bands are 22K (916). Anything set with a diamond or a coloured stone is made in 18K (750), the standard alloy for claw and pavé settings because it is harder and holds the stone.

  2. A ring is priced as gold value plus making charge plus the stone, if any, with 5% VAT on the subtotal. On a band the weight does most of the work; on a solitaire the stone does, so ask for its carat weight and report alongside the gold figures.

  3. Resizing is separate work, quoted before it starts. If you are buying for someone else, bring a ring that fits them and we will measure it.
